Under the theme of “Sustainable City/Developing World”, organized with the support of UN Habitat, and as an event of the World Urban Campaign, the 46th ISOCARP congress will explore during three and a half days the scope for more effective planning and management of this growth through the combined perspective of academics, governments and the private sector form both the North and the South.

The inaugural day, 20 September, will be held at the United Nations’ complex in Gigiri. The opening plenary will include remarks from representatives of the Government of Kenya and the City of Nairobi at the highest level; the Executive Director of UN-Habitat; Mairura Omwenga, Chairman, Local Organising Committee; and Ismael Fernández Mejía, President, ISOCARP.

The plenary will include keynote presentations to be delivered by Prof Mona Serageldin, Vice President at the Institute of International Urban Development, and former professor at Harvard University; Lamia Kamal-Chaoui, Head of Directorate for Public Governance and Territorial Development, OECD; and Stuart Clarkson, CEO Africa, Siemens.

The following days (21-23 September) the congress will be held at the Kenya International Conference Centre, one of Africa’s prime conference venues, located right in the heart of Nairobi.  A number of special sessions would include:

  • a special session on Pre and Post Disaster Planning with the Deputy Mayor of Kabul, the Deputy Director of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, and UN Habitat and ISOCARP representatives providing an update on the Haiti response.
  • a training seminar organized by UN Habitat, which will provide participants practical tools to better face urban development challenges
  • a session co-hosted by the Urban Planning Society of China, which will introduce a selection of best planning practices in China
  • a session dedicated to Habitat Professionals Forum, discussing the HPF Charter introduced at the World Urban Forum in Rio
  • a presentation on the 100 Cities Initiative, part of the World Urban Campaign
  • technical presentations by Siemens, Arnaiz Consultores and the NESTtown Project in Ethiopia.
